No. 48 Monday, February 01, 2010
A British woman who tried unsuccessfully to smuggle cocaine from the island was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 in the Montego Bay RM court on Thursday, January 28.
Mavis Blikslager, 50, of London, England is answering to charges of possession, dealing and attempting to export the illicit substance.
As a condition of her bail, she was instructed to reside in Westmoreland and is to report to the Bluefields Police Station on Tuesdays and Fridays.
She was also instructed to surrender her travel documents and a stop order will be placed at all ports of exit.
She is booked to reappear before the court on April 1.
Reports are that on January 21, 2010 about 7:30p.m., Blikslager was on her way to board a British Airways flight to London from the Sangster International Airport when a sniffer dog alerted its handler to a travelling bag she was carrying.
The bag was opened and searched in her presence and was found to have 6 tins of fruit juice, all of which was found to contain a liquid substance appearing to be cocaine.
Hence she was arrested and charged.
