In the previous publication of the Western Mirror, 13 year-old Harrison Memorial High School, student Jody Esi Otu, wrote and dedicated a book of poetry to her African father. This young lady amazed us with her accomplishment, as many teenagers her age are not thinking about writing a book, let alone writing a book dedicated to her father.
So instead of writing a lone poem for their father or just making him a card to show her appreciation, she wrote a compilation of poems and published them in a book, so not only did she show her father love, but she developed a way for other children like her to show their love for their father, which would be buying her book. Now that is killing two birds with one stone. This is also a testament to the fact that at any age, one can attain their goals, regardless of the obstacles they face.
Our ancestors have proven time and time again that regardless of the circumstances, whether it be slavery, or racism, or lack of opportunity, with hard work, dedication and a lot of guts, anyone can be what they want to be.
Barack Obama is another prime example of overcoming adversity to becoming the president of the most powerful country in the world. And that is no mean feat for a man whose father is black and battled adversity in his day. Obama made black people see that there are no limitations on them, young people now 1001, to Obama for inspiration when they face adversity, they think, 'if a black man can rise to become the president of the United States of America, then I can reach my goal'.
Then there are our own national heroes, who, even in the face of death, pledged that they will press on, just so that we can lead better lives today. They were not intimidated by the gallows, as a matter fact they challenged there detractors to put them there.
So it does not matter what age you are, or what position you are in, as long as determination and the drive to succeed is apart of your mental make up, you can achieve whatever you put your mind to. Don't ever put limitations on your dreams; you may never know where they may take you.
