A man who allegedly used a machete to chop another man causing him to be hospitalized has been released on bail.
Charged with wounding with intent is Gary Graham of Green Pond, St. James.
When the matter came before the Montego Bay RM Court on Monday, February 8, Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris advised Graham, who claimed that he acted in self defense, that he could not raise the issue of self defense as he was not under attack when he committed the offence.
On that basis, she also advised him that he would have to enter a guilty plea.
The magistrate said that he will also be assisted in getting legal representation.
Graham was offered bail in the sum of $70,000 and was instructed to report to the Freeport Police Station
on Mondays.
He is scheduled to reappear before the court on March II.
The incident reportedly took place on January 27, 2010 about 9am after the complainant heard that the accused man was at a standpipe on Creek Street using his toothbrush and went to speak with him.
An argument developed and in the process, the complainant threw a stone at Graham.
The accused man ran but returned later with a machete which he used to chop the complainant.
The complainant fell and Graham continued to chop him.
The wounded man was assisted to the Cornwall Regional hospital where he was admitted.
Graham was later arrested at his house.
