A St. James man has been given a suspended jail sentence after being accused of assaulting another man when the man refused to purchase an air freshener from him.
Delroy Martin, 48, of Railway Lane in the parish pleaded guilty to assault at common law.
Passing sentence on Monday, February 8, Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris sentenced the accused man to 12 months imprisonment and suspended the sentence for 12 months.
She also imposed a supervision order on him.
The prosecution alleged that on January 11, 2010 about 8:30 p.m., the complainant was sitting in- his car at Fish Lane when Martin approached him and offered to sell him an air freshener.
After the complainant indicated that he was not interested, Martin walked away then turned back and pulled a knife at the complainant.
He then pushed a bag through the window and demanded the complainant to purchase the item while
swinging his knife in a menacing manner.
The complainant alighted from his vehicle and chased the accused man and held on to him and took him to the Barnett Street Police Station where a report was made.
Hence Martin was arrested and charged.
