Forever Sports recorded a 1-0 win over Dunbar's River in the Garald Hamilton/Ice Hills Entertainment Westmoreland Under-17 league. One of three matches played at the Llandilo field on Saturday, the other being a 2-all draw between Straths and Russia, while New Market overran Roaring River 1-0 thanks to a Tafarie Williams 80th minute strike.
Both teams struggled throughout the entire match as a result of a heavy winds, which took away some of the quality play that has been expected.
However, Forever Sports appeared the more comfortable of the two and were it not for poor shooting technique could have had a goal or two before halftime.
Dunbar's River got their act together and slowly began making a few telling passes in the midfield area, but they too wasted several decent chances and rued the misses later-on.
With just nine minutes already elapsed, substitute Odane Dove poked home a lose ball from close range. Ten minutes later, Kenardo Cooper almost doubled the lead with a stinging right-footer that had the goalkeeper beaten. Unfortunately the shot also beat the left upright.
That was the closest either teams would come for the remainder of the half.
Second half was no better, as the teams tried in vain to control the ball because of the windy conditions. But spurred on by supporters, Dunbar's River came mighty close to leveling through a break-away, but Michael Kerr's shot was brilliantly saved at the near post by the Forever Sports goalie Keto Myrie.
"It's a successful start to the competition and already we see the raw talent available here. It's getting better each year and we are proud to be sponsors to this league," Garold Hamilton, whose company is one of.the sponsors, told the Western Mirror after. the matches.
In another match played elsewhere, Mount Grace beat Savannah 1-0. Extra Flex never kicked a ball Saturday but were awarded maximum points after defending champions Munro failed to show for their match.
